Google Search is no longer limited to ten blue links. AI Overviews can summarize a topic directly on the results page, while AI Mode supports conversational research, comparisons and follow-up questions. That shift has amplified one question: is SEO dying?
The short answer is no. Google's 2026 guidance explicitly says that existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. What is changing is the goal: websites now need to earn visibility in ranked results and the trust required to become a supporting source inside an AI answer.
In its May 15, 2026 guidance on optimizing for generative AI in Search, Google emphasizes valuable original content, good page experience, accessible text, quality media and accurate structured data. It also states that publishers do not need a special AI file or a new schema type created specifically for AI results.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google's search experience for complex questions that benefit from reasoning, comparison and deeper exploration. Instead of returning only a ranked list, it can produce a sourced answer and let the user continue with follow-up questions.
Google describes a technique called query fan-out: the system may break a question into subtopics and issue multiple related searches. A query such as “Should a 50-person manufacturer use a custom CRM or an off-the-shelf CRM?” can expand into cost, integration, security, industry fit and scalability. This makes complete topic architecture more valuable than a page designed around one short keyword.
Traditional SEO vs. AI search visibility
- Traditional SEO helps a page get crawled, understood and ranked for relevant queries.
- AI search visibility also considers whether content can support an answer, be cited in the right context and place a brand in a recommendation set.
- The shared foundation remains crawlability, indexing, useful content, internal linking, trust signals and a strong user experience.
There is no secret optimization trick for AI Mode. Google's official AI features documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in standard Google Search to appear as a supporting link. Technical SEO is still the entry ticket.
What are AEO and GEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring information so that a user's question receives a clear, direct answer. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a broader framework for making a brand and its content understandable, trustworthy and citable in generative AI answers.
These terms are useful working models, but they should not be treated as replacements for SEO. Google has specifically challenged several myths: there is no special GEO schema, no hidden text written for AI and no new machine-readable file required for AI Mode.
Brand visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI
Different systems use different retrieval and answer-generation methods, so nobody can guarantee a universal “number one” position. However, several practices improve clarity and discoverability across systems:
- Build a consistent entity: keep company name, expertise, service areas, team and contact details consistent.
- Publish first-party value: use original research, project data, case studies, screenshots, pricing logic and expert commentary.
- Make answers citable: place the concise answer close to the question, then add evidence and nuance.
- Show accountability: display the author, publication date, meaningful update date and sources.
- Manage crawler access: avoid accidentally blocking search and AI discovery bots at robots.txt, hosting or CDN level.
OpenAI's ChatGPT Search guidance recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if publishers want their content to be discoverable. Access does not guarantee ranking or citation; it is a technical prerequisite for discovery.
Technical AI SEO checklist for 2026
1. Crawling and indexing
Review robots.txt, meta robots, canonical tags, redirects and CDN security rules. Important information should be available as understandable text, not hidden behind interactions that a crawler cannot access. Keep XML sitemaps current and use internal links so that critical pages are not orphaned.
2. Site architecture
Connect service, industry, problem and case-study pages in logical topic clusters. A custom software hub should link to CRM development, integrations, pricing, process and real project examples. This context helps people and machine systems understand your expertise.
3. Structured data
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article, BreadcrumbList and, where appropriate, FAQPage markup can clarify page meaning. The markup must match visible content, stay current and avoid fabricated ratings or hidden questions. Structured data can reduce ambiguity; it does not guarantee inclusion in an AI response.
4. Page experience and media
Protect mobile performance, readable typography, efficient images, useful alt text and HTTPS. Original product screenshots, demonstrations and explanatory video provide stronger evidence than generic stock imagery.
How should FAQ and question-led content be written?
Do not create question headings merely to repeat keywords. Build the question set from sales objections, support conversations and Search Console queries. Answer each question clearly in the first 40-80 words, then add examples, exceptions and implementation detail.
A useful set follows the buying journey: “What is it?”, “Is it suitable for me?”, “What does it cost?”, “What are the alternatives?”, “What are the risks?” and “How do I implement it?” This naturally supports long-tail search and conversational AI queries.
What should businesses do now?
- Export the 20 pages with the most Search Console impressions and the queries that drive conversions.
- Fix stale facts, vague answers, missing authorship and weak sourcing.
- Create a topic cluster, decision guide and real case study for each core service.
- Compare Organization, Article, Service and breadcrumb markup with visible content.
- Manage Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot access deliberately in robots.txt and the CDN.
- Measure qualified forms, proposals and revenue alongside traffic and brand searches.
Google also announced limited testing of dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026. If that report is available in your property, use it to review AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. Otherwise, combine Web search performance with Analytics engagement and conversion data.
Frequently asked questions
Will AI Mode kill SEO?
No. It changes search behavior and click distribution, but crawlability, indexing, useful content, authority and user experience remain foundational.
Is there a separate schema for GEO?
No. Google does not require a special AI or GEO schema. Use existing schema.org types accurately and make sure markup matches visible content.
Can AI-generated content rank?
The decisive questions are accuracy, originality, reliability and usefulness, not which tool produced the first draft. Unreviewed mass content creates search and brand risk.
